Revisualizing Italian Silentscapes 1896-1922 (RevIS)
Landscapes and locations of the first Italian cinema one hundred years later

The Project
What can the cinema of the past tell us about the territory we live in and its landscapes? From the very beginnings of cinema, Italy was considered a particularly “cinegenic” country. The images of its ancient villages, its cities undergoing modernization, the beauties of nature, the sea and the mountains, immediately became ways to promote the Belpaese and its lifestyles even beyond national borders. But not only that: they also offered evocative settings to successful dramas and comedies. Through the investigation and analysis of a vast body of titles, both fiction and non-fiction movies, preserved today in major film archives, the RevIS project aims to investigate the locations and modes of mise-en-scene staging of the Italian landscape in Italian and foreign production between 1896 and 1922.
